It Just Makes Common Sense

Common sense is defined as “sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence.”  When it comes to getting through this life here on earth we don’t need a degree (specialized training) from a seminary to teach us some basic concepts about God that will help us in a wide variety of situations.  It just takes reading the Bible and using common sense.  For example, after reading various parts of the Bible one could deduce that God is powerful, intelligent, creative, protective and caring.  He loves His people.  He provides for His people.  As Christians we are to believe these things about God and much more as we learn about Him.  Now read Psalm 23:

1You, LORD, are my shepherd. I will never be in need. 2You let me rest in fields of green grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water, 3and you refresh my life. You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths. 4I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod makes me feel safe. 5You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows. 6Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, LORD.”

The Lord is compared to a shepherd who cares and provides for his flock.  Now if we really believe the Lord is our shepherd and will take care of us, we can use common sense and realize that He will take care of all our needs, protect us, guide us, comfort us, etc.  He will show us love and kindness.  Using common sense based on what we learn about the Lord in this passage, we can realize that we don’t have to go through this life with doubts, worries and fears.  The Lord will take care of us.  We can know that it doesn’t matter whether we are in a dark valley or up on the mountain top.
